The tournament, which was rained out on its original Aug. 23 date, is being held next Monday, beginning at 8:30 at the Lochmere Country Club in Tilton. Michael Moyer, Laconia police chief and tournament co-director, said he came up with the idea last year as a way to raise money for the children's' organization of which he is a board-member. It costs $400 for a foursome, and there is a limit of 27 four-person teams. The price includes 18 holes of golf with cart, post-tourney luncheon and raffle. Moyer said they are still looking for teams to play in the tournament.
Paugus Bay Marina heard about the tournament and wanted to do something to encourage participation, so they are donating a 22-foot, 2011 Bryant powerboat, with a retail price of $57,000. Moyer added that the AutoServ of Tilton has donated a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta as a prize. Both grand prizes are meant for anyone who can sink a hole-in-one. If two people can do it, one prize will go to each person. For more information, contact co-Director Mike Moyer at 520-1868 for more information.

Lakes Region Audubon nature program
Squam Lakes Natural Science Center director Iain MacLeod will give the special presentation on Ospreys on September 16. The Osprey is one of the largest raptors in North America and is a spectacular sight for birdwatchers in migration or when they nest in the neighborhood. MacLeod will describe his 30 year fascination with, and study of, this spectacular bird. From the remote lochs of the Scottish Highlands to the lakes, beaver ponds, and cell towers of the Granite State, he will describe a story of decline and persecution, recovery and protection, and ultimately population expansion and success, bringing the story up to date with news of the dozen or so Osprey pairs in the Lakes Region. "Killing Time"

The award winning film, "Killing Time," documents the expulsion of the Lhotshampa people from the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, land of the Gross Happiness Index, and their seventeen years in refugee camps in Nepal. Having migrated to the southern lowlands of Bhutan in the late 19th century on the invitation of the Bhutanese government, the Lhotshampa people were evicted in the early 1990's as a part of the Buddhist government's exercise in cultural preservation. The film takes the viewer into the huts where the refugees, who are now our neighbors in New Hampshire, once lived with little to occupy their time. For many Bhutanese young people these huts are the only homes they knew until recently resettling in the United States.
"Killing Time," filmed prior to the 2008 designation of refugee status for the Bhutanese refugee population, will be shown at the Laconia Middle School at 7:00 pm on September 30, 2010. The 70-minute film will be followed by a panel discussion, which will update the audience on the status of this most populous group on New Americans living in Laconia, Concord, and Manchester.
