Volunteers Wanted for the Lakes Region United Way's Standards of Excellence Audit Team

Every year the Lakes Region United Way (LRUW) performs a review of programs seeking funding from the LRUW. It is called Standards of Excellence (SE). Volunteers from all over the Lakes Region make up the Standards of Excellence Audit Team.

The mission of Standards of Excellence Audit Team is to perform due diligence on all prospective partners of the Lakes Region United Way. The SE Audit Team will look specifically at the community impact of the program, the business operations of the program and the financial fitness of the program. Each program will receive an investment rating for consideration by the Board of Directors.

This year the SE team will focus on the Healthy Communities through Engagement Initiative. Healthy Communities seeks to strengthen the community by connecting diverse individuals and organizations through programming and initiatives that promote civic engagement and economic growth.

If you think you might be interested, please contact Jack Terrill at 524-6864 ext. 103 by December 12th and learn more about how the process works. Team members will be asked to serve a minimum of one year on the audit team. The team will meet monthly, and will have 5-8 hours of work each month outside of the meetings.

This is a great opportunity to make a difference in the Lakes Region, and a chance to explore the social world as it relates to the Healthy Community Initiative. As a member of the Audit Team, you will play an important role in safeguarding the United Way community investments. We hope you will consider this opportunity to give back to the community.

Seeking Volunteers to Help People Prepare Tax Returns

The Financial Stability Partnership, an initiative of the Lakes Region United Way, is seeking volunteers to help people and families in need. The VITA-Volunteer Income Tax Assistance-program provides courtesy return preparation assistance to people who cannot afford professional tax help, such as seniors, disabled, low-income and non-English speaking people.

According to Susan Dagoumas, chief volunteer for the Lakes Region VITA program and employee of Laconia Savings Bank, "VITA volunteers explain many special tax credits and deductions and how people may claim them on their tax returns. The VITA volunteers are playing a direct role in the financial stabilization of individuals and families who are struggling to get by."

The IRS provides free tax law training, electronic filing software training and all the materials needed to prepare basic individual tax returns. Volunteers will be asked to complete about 20 hours of training in December and then average about 4-6 hours per week from January to April 15th.

The Financial Stability Partnership is a collaborative effort designed to help hard working families in the Lakes Region become financially stable and take the next steps to long-term independence. The Partnership includes NH Catholic Charities, Laconia Savings Bank, City of Laconia, Casey Family Services, UNH Cooperative Extension, Internal Revenue Service, Laconia Area Community Land Trust, and the Lakes Region United Way.
