Community Investment Advisory Team
The Lakes Region United Way has an ongoing team of volunteers that help provide direction and oversight for our community investments and work with our community partners to help develop and promote excellence and coordination in the delivery of services. A key component of the work of the team is to perform due diligence on all prospective partners of the Lakes Region United Way.  The team will look specifically at the community impact of the program, the business operations of the program and the financial fitness of the applying organization.  The team will combine this information and develop an investment rating for each potential partner. Service on the Due Diligence team is a short term commitment of 1-2 months involving a total of approximately ten hours.  Continued interest in this important function could lead to a position on the Community Investment Advisory Team which helps guide the organization in its strategic community investing. Prerequisites for becoming team members include a desire to learn more about our social service network in the Lakes Region, ability to read and comprehend relatively complex applications and logic models and an ability to work as a team player.  A flexible schedule that allows for meetings and site visits during business hours is necessary.  A business and/or social service background is helpful. This is a great opportunity to make a difference in the Lakes Region, and as a member of the Due Diligence Team, you will play an important role in safeguarding the United Way community investments.  We hope you will consider this opportunity to give back to the community. For more information, call Jack at 524-6864 extension 103.

Survivors of violence want your listening ear
Survivors of domestic and sexual violence call our 24-hour hotline for information and support. They want to talk with empathetic people who will listen, provide support, and give them hope. Do you have good listening and communication skills? You can make a difference by becoming a hotline advocate. We offer volunteer training sessions twice a year, typically on weeknights and Saturdays. Our comprehensive training qualifies volunteers to hold confidentiality and work directly with victim/survivors as required by law. Opportunities for continuing education are available frequently throughout the year. Past volunteers tell us the sessions have been informative, and that they teach skills that have been useful in other parts of their lives. The Community Action Program Volunteer driver Program
is now accepting applications for Volunteer Drivers and Riders! We have begun accepting prospective drivers into the program. If you are someone with even 30 minutes to spare, we can use you. Many people in your local community need a ride and that ride may mean the difference between someone taking the medicine that keeps them healthy, or going without and then needing a ride in an ambulance to the Hospital for the complications of untreated blood pressure! It's flexible! We'll work with your schedule. Contact Susan Jutras at 224-8043 or sjutras@bm-cap.org.

The St. Vincent de Paul Society
in Laconia is looking for a "few good men and women!" Have you ever thought about being a social worker? Did you every wish you could impact directly on the lives of people in need? Then why don't you give us call and put those dreams in action? The St. Vincent de Paul Society's financial assistance program is in need of a few dedicated volunteers to work with families and individuals in the Lakes Region who are in need of financial help. We work in teams of two and meet directly with these applicants to determine how we can assist them both in terms of short term financial distress and long term plans of action. We provide assistance with rent, utilities, heat, car repairs, child care, and medical costs not covered by other agencies or public programs. We don't replace existing public and private provision programs, but supplement them as best we can. We work in strict confidentiality within a context of "practical compassion." While we are concerned with every story of plight, we have our feet firmly on the ground of reality and understanding. Our program is open to all in need regardless of race or religion. We cover the city of Laconia and the towns of Alton, Belmont, Gilford, and Meredith. We have volunteers from all works of life, various faith-based communities, and all ages. If this sounds of interest to you, why not give me a call? It'll be the best non-paying job you ever had! With God's love, Erika Johnson, President, St. Vincent de Paul Society. 603-524-5470

The Senior Companion Program is looking for additional volunteers to support the frail elderly and homebound adults in the Lakes Region.  The program plans to hold their next training classes in late June. The Senior Companion Program is one of three Senior Corps Programs that uses the time and talent of older adults to provide services in their communities.  Senior Companions, aged 55-plus, are trained to offer at no cost to the homebound and/or elderly citizens they visit, friendship and assistance so they may remain independent in their own homes.  More than 75 active senior volunteers in Grafton, Belknap, Merrimack, Hillsborough, and Rockingham counties visit almost 500 of their frailer contemporaries through the program. The Companions must meet income eligibility requirements and be willing to commit to serving 20 hours each week.   In addition, they take part in a three-day volunteer training and are asked to attend monthly in-service meetings for on-going education on topics relevant to aging and care-giving, plus a monthly station meeting that offers guidance and support for them in their volunteer roles.  In return, they receive a small hourly stipend, mileage reimbursement to and from their assignments, and paid leave.   These earnings are not considered income and do not impact the Companion's eligibility for assistance programs or housing. Anyone interested in applying to become a Senior Companion volunteer is encouraged to contact program coordinator Catherine Turgeon at 225-3295 for more information.
