The Taylor Community Completes Record United Way Campaign
The Taylor Community's support of the Lakes Region United Way demonstrates its employees' belief in giving back to the community.
"The dollars we give to the Lakes Region United Way benefit so many in the community, perhaps many of them people we love," said Employee Campaign Coordinator Alicia M. Segalini. "Perhaps it is our grandmothers who were stay-at-home moms and now receive hardly any Social Security, or our neighbors who have a son who is heading down the wrong road and who feel they have nowhere else to turn for help. Maybe it's a cousin who is a single parent trying to make it work with two jobs and who can't afford daycare, never mind groceries; or our child's friend at school who, along with his mom, is trying to escape an abusive home. These services are not just provided to people less fortunate than us; these are services provided to all who ask for the help."
During this campaign, the Taylor Community raised $10,128, a 6.6% increase over last year and five times the amount raised just four years ago. "People are giving more generously this year," Segalini continued. "Any donation is a big donation. It doesn't have to be $10 per pay period; it can be $1 a week. It is whatever you can afford. If you donate what you can afford, that is a generous donation. For me, it was deciding to give up my ice coffee in the morning and donating that amount to Lakes Region United Way!"
Segalini was deeply moved when she heard Lakes Region United Way President Jack Terrill recount visiting one of the five United Way supported daycare centers that offer early learning regardless of a family's ability to pay. Terrill characterized the center as "a place filled with love," blessed with an owner who had committed her life to children and early learning. During the visit, he spotted a bucket of boots in all shapes and sizes. It dawned on him that the boots were meant for the many children who arrived every day not dressed for the snowy winter. "The bucket of boots symbolizes the tremendous needs that the United Way fills," Segalini said. "Our donations help to fill the bucket of needed funds to support the programs that help our community, schools, neighbors, friends and family."
